I have to admit, I've always been excited about the prospect of hosting a lecture series. If I can subscribe to a cliche for a moment, engineers like lists and facts. In that case, I'll spare you long grafs and make my business case brief instead.
A Lecture Series will attract:
Houston SAE Senior Section members;
UH Faculty and Staff;
Corporate recruiters;
positive media attention.
A Lecture Series will be the perfect venue for:
Showcasing the car;
Engaging current sponsors;
Wooing potential supporters.
A Lecture Series can help:
Build your SAR-format resume if you help to organize it;
Lend a sense of legitimacy to the club;
Answer questions you might have about the "real world" of engineering;
Give you career connections within the automotive industry.
Two high-ranking engineers at Ford and GM have expressed serious interest so far.
The lecture series would be subsidized up to $550 by SAE International. One of the engineers has assured me that his company will pick up his tab for transportation and lodging.
I agree, I have liked this idea since Miguel first mentioned it. And the car should be at a presentable point (perhaps not done, but very interesting nonetheless) in 2 months. Assuming the event is open to the public, I believe UH student services will also pick up part of the tab.
We are aiming for this to be at the end Feb. It will also act as the formal presentation of the car to sponsors. We will be talking to other colleges about having the bill footed. As such it will be in the Hilton, it will be for SAE/Engineers/Sponsor and so on. Any help is welcome, all ideas are welcome. AND A BIG THANKS GOES TO ADAM FOR BRINGING THIS UP!
